Grading Rubrics

This rubric is for guideline purposes only and will not be used to grade lab assignments.  I am moving away from using the rubric.  This will allow me to give partial credit to students for each section.  Several parents pushed for a rubric at the
beginning of the year.  I do not think they are a good way to grade assignments because if a rubric is used, the grader must
adhere strictly to the rubrics requriements (which means no partial credit).  Thank you.

This is the Lab Report Rubric for all labs (the wording for content will change slightly to assess knowledge; however, overall requirements are the same).  They need to follow the format from the notes and read the rubrics.  They may also use the tutoring tab to see what goes in the data, results, and conclusion sections.

Students have been shown in class several examples of each section on the overhead projector and in written form.  We have all looked at a lab together and graded it based on the rubric to check for understanding.  Students may write their lab reports on separate documents and attach them into their notebooks upon completion (this will allow for changes if mistakes are made).

Students must show all properties of a good chart or graph to get full credit in the data section.  These notes are still available on Verge.

If your student needs extra help please send them to tutoring Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday at 7:30 am in room 1608. Students must sign up on the tutoring log.

Students who come to tutoring will recieve the supplemental handouts for students who need remediation.

Gifted Biology Extention

All Labs and Lab Reports are extentions for the Gifted Biology Curriculum.  Lab Report writing is a useful skill to develop for future Gifted, Advanced, AP Classes, Dual Credit Enrollment, and College Classes. We do not write lab reports for every lab conducted in class.  List is subject to change due to time availability.  Below is a quick view of Labs that will be written:

Water Properties Lab Due August 27th, 2018
pH Lab Due September 4, 2018
Osmosis Gummy Bear Lab October 26th, 2018 (Use Verge for Print out)
The rubric is a guideline and will not be used to grade this assignment.  The rubric simply tells the
student what I will be looking for.  I am moving away from this rubric despite some parents request for
one.  Rubrics do not allow me as the teacher to give partial credit to students due to the way the are
written.  I will use teacher discretion and grade all labs with partial credit in mind for students who tried
                                      to complete all requirements.

3-D Projects

Gifted Extension to help students conceptualize the content by demonstrating their understanding by creating their own artifacts to communicate understanding via written, visual, auditory, and kinesthetic means.

Macromolecule Project Due September 21st
Cell Analogy Project Due October 26th
Biomes Project Due November 30th

Below are some useful links for project completion.  All items may not be available for every project.  Students must learn to complete their work by taking good notes and participating in classroom discussions on project topics.  Rubrics and Checklists are optional documents fowarded to the student by the teacher.  As we progress through the semester, some of these items will not be posted because students must practice learning in a variety of ways for college and AP/Accelerated courses: auditory, kinesthetic, visual, and written learning.
